About this course

Introduction to different textile materials: textile fibres, threads/yarns, different fabrics (woven fabric, knitted fabric etc) and their fabrication methods. Modern textile fabrication methods: nonwoven fabrics, composite fabrics etc. Novel textile materials finishing processes. Leather and fur. High-performance fibres: structure, fabrication methods and properties. Aramid fibres, high-performance PE fibres, carbon fibres, glass fibres, chemical resistance fibres, heat resistance fibres etc. Application of high-performance fibres. Intelligent textile materials and their application. Textile fibre and materials used in composite materials. Different textile materials used in upholstery furniture industry. Applications of modern textile materials: sport, clothing for protection, medicine, different industrial and technical textiles etc.

Learning outcomes

The knowledge of the classification of textile fibres and their properties. Ability to associate fibre properties in microscopical level to textile materials properties. Knows different textile materials (woven fabric, knitted fabric, nonwoven fabrics, composite materials etc.). Has an overview of different high-performance fibres and knows their applications. Has an overview of different textile materials (including leather) used in upholstery furniture industry. Has an overview of different intelligent textile materials and knows applications of different modern textile materials.

Examination

Final assessment can consist of one test/assignment or several smaller assignments completed during the whole course. After declaring a course the student can re-sit the exam/assessment once.
