Model-based Systems Engineering for Digital Twin Systems

2MET20EUROTEQ alliance
Computer Science and ICT, Data, AI

About this course

As digital twins are complicated systems, we need systems engineering methods, techniques and workflows to realise such digital twins and twinned systems. The BIP covers the full spectrum of twins starting from models, to shadows, and twins. Furthermore, aspects such as calibration, validity, historical data, storage and representation of data, information and knowledge will be covered in the BIP.
Through a combination of lectures and mini-lectures (recorded, for the online phase; and in-person, for the intensive week at TU/e from April 12–16 2027), hands-on activities covering the different methods, techniques and tools needed as part of engineering of digital twins, and a case study, students will gain knowledge and skills across the spectrum of twinning, culminating in the group project that is woven through the intensive week on campus.

FOR STUDENTS TRAVELING TO EINDHOVEN: Selection & Funding
• Selection is based on motivation letters and sufficient background in programming and logic.
• Capstone Week in Eindhoven is a mandatory in-person component during the final week of the course

Learning outcomes

The learning outcomes can be summarised as follows:

  • The student can identify the core digital twin services and create an architecture for such a twinned system (application)
  • The student is able to explain and compare the different models expressed in different formalisms for the purpose of Digital Twinning.
  • The student can engineer the digital twin of asystem with a given set of services.
  • The student is able to identify and compare suitable techniques and data-structures for storing and processing data, information and knowledge.
  • The student can demonstrate the adequateness and correctness of the models underlying the services of the twin.

Examination

Assessment will be based on the final group capstone project (35%), small assignments in the initial part of the in-person week (30%), as well as smaller homework exercises in the earlier parts of the course (35%). In the group project, students apply the methods, techniques and tools they have learned about, to a realistic digital twin case study in the systems engineering domain; it will be executed during the second part of the in-person week at TU/e and wrapped up remotely shortly after.

Course requirements

Master level course, experience in programming and logic is a must

Resources

  • Relevant study material will be made available in the initial, online period of the Erasmus BIP course. We will also supply you with examples and part of the use cases you will use in the course including in the intensive on-campus week in April.
