About this course
The course provides fundamental physics and chemistry essential to large-scale CO2 storage and basic engineering knowledge and mathematics for numerical CO2 storage simulation. It equips the student with fundamental knowledge in the multidisciplinary area of CO2 storage, serving as a stepping stone for further specialization in a particular area of CO2 storage or for developing novel storage processes
Learning outcomes
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
- Understand the role of CO2 storage in the whole CCS chain and its importance to CO2 emission reduction.
- Describe major CO2 storage options and the main mechanisms involved in each option.
- Understand the fundamental physics and chemistry for CO2 storage, including thermodynamic properties and phase equilibrium, kinetic reactions, and multiphase flow.
- Describe and quantify the phase equilibrium and thermodynamic properties in CO2 storage.
- Understand the reservoir engineering basics needed for CO2 storage.
- Understand the basics of geochemistry and describe major geochemical reactions in CO2 storage.
- Identify and define the major process during CO2 storage.
- Describe the governing equations underlying CO2 storage simulation.
- Understand the numerical fundamentals underlying CO2 storage simulation.
- Perform CO2 storage simulation and analyze the storage process in a quantitative manner.
