About this course

In the near future, electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices are expected to become an integral part of our energy system, targeting to reduce the need for carbon-intensive processes and de-fossilize industries (Power-to-X). This course aims to provide a fundamental understanding of electrochemical reactions and the necessary concepts to describe electrochemical processes, enabling students to explain the working principles of selected electrochemical applications. The material of this course is equally suited for chemistry, material science, and physics students with previous knowledge of thermodynamics, kinetics, mixtures, and chemical reactions.

The objectives of this course are to develop an understanding of electrochemistry and its specific concepts and to grasp the various conceptual approaches to describe cells, reactions, and their limitations.

Learning outcomes

A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

  • Give an overview of modern electrochemical terms and concepts
  • Explain the key principles of electrochemistry, e.g. redox reactions
  • Describe the fundamentals of an electrochemical cell, such as the role of the anode/cathode/electrolyte
  • Evaluate a cell’s potential and predict the effect of concentration and temperature on an electrochemical reaction using the Nernst equation
  • Explain the basics of kinetics and mass transport of species in an electrochemical cell
  • Explain the principles (thermodynamics, kinetics, mass transport) governing an electrochemical reaction
  • Organize and execute project work based on the knowledge obtained
  • Communicate project work results orally and in writing
  • Evaluate a scientific presentation and give constructive feedback to peers
