About this course
Introduction to overall principles of what is a wooden house, how to build it and how to use wood as a building material in the best way. Provided and overview of engineered wood types, building components, maintenance principles and regulations for wooden buildings. Overview of BIM. In the second half of semester focus is made on prefabricated wooden buildings, understanding the designing, project planning and executing processes of the prefabricated structures. A short introduction to hybrid structures and future trends of a wooden architecture is given. Course is designed to give introduction to prefabricated wooden buildings for students with different backgrounds, which is why a background in civil engineering is helpful, but not mandatory.
This course will be offered in the spring semester of the 2026/2027 academic year. The spring semester at TalTech runs from 1 February to 13 June 2027 (as indicated in the Start Date section). TalTech's timetables for the spring semester of 2027 will be published at the end of January at https://tunniplaan.taltech.ee.
Learning outcomes
After completing this course the student:
- identifies the main industrial production technologies of wooden houses;
- explains the basic principles of design and construction of perimeter support and load bearing structures in a wooden building;
- analyses main principles of building physics (heat, moisture, sound) of a wooden building while prioritising solutions for energy efficiency;
- classifies the main engineered wood materials and construction types describing their characteristics, applications and the main calculation principles for constructions;
- differentiates BIM from traditional design and building processes;
- elaborates on fire safety methods of wooden buildings at the basic level;
- relates his/her theoretical knowledge and analytical skills to practical tasks.
Examination
Final assessment can consist of one test/assignment or several smaller assignments completed during the whole course. After declaring a course the student can re-sit the exam/assessment once. Assessment can be graded or non-graded. For specific information about the assessment process please get in touch with the contact person of this course. For specific information about grade transfer please contact your home university
