Cellular Communication Technologies

4G/5G and beyond communication systems: wireless evolution, 5G air interface, 5G NR physical resource, channels and signals, 5G handover and mobility management. Core network: 3GPP 5G Standard Overview, 5G core network, network slicing, Internet of Things (IoT) - communication technologies. Advanced topics: cellular IoT, mobile positioning, radio access techniques, Open RAN and interfaces, MIMO, cooperative communications, device to device (D2D) communications.

This course will be offered in the spring semester of the 2026/2027 academic year. The spring semester at TalTech runs from 1 February to 13 June 2027 (as indicated in the Start Date section). TalTech's timetables for the spring semester of 2027 will be published at the end of January at https://tunniplaan.taltech.ee.

After completing this course, the student:

• describes the architecture of 5G cellular communication network;
• explains main functions of the core of 5G cellular network;
• analyses the quality of service provided by 5G test network based on self-collected parameters of radio signal, communication channel and network;
• explains main principles of advanced topics including cellular internet of things, mobile positioning, radio access techniques, cooperative communication, device to device communication and network slicing.

Final assessment can consist of one test/assignment or several smaller assignments completed during the whole course. After declaring a course the student can re-sit the exam/assessment once. Basic knowledge of telecommunications and MATLAB.

The course is in blended format and students are expected to come to TalTech to do the practical labs, project and exam. Specific dates will be provided at the beginning of the course.
