Urban Planning I

In the course of Urban Planning I, we teach students on how the cities were planned from ancient times to the present and how discipline itself have evolved in the course of time. By using the real examples, we describe urban planning as a complex process with numerous feedbacks that evolves in time and involves various actors with different values and interests and resources. The course presents general principles and concepts of European spatial planning and planning system in the Czech Republic providing students with practical insight into relevant planning documents, legislation and institutions. Special lectures focus on actual topics: planning of urban ecosystems and participatory planning.

At the end of the semester students will be evaluated based on the presentation and discussion of their seminar work via TEAMS or in classroom. In their seminar works students will analyse and critically evaluate selected case of planning process in one of the following domains: Urban mobility, Housing, Public services, Ecosystems, Economic activities, Cultural heritage.

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to: • Explain the relationship between humankind and the environment and how this relationship evolved in history. • Describe the spatial and temporal dimensions of urban processes and their complex interdependence. • Define the plan and planning and the role of planning in the management of environmental change in a sustainable way. • Describe the evolution of urban and regional planning in history. • Identify the most significant challenges for contemporary spatial planning in developed countries. • Describe the major factors of urban development: demographics, economy, mobility, housing and residential mobility, and services. • Describe the role of ecosystem services in sustainable urban development. • Describe the approaches to adaptation and mitigation of negative impacts of climate change. • Define the public interests in urban planning. • Describe the legal and institutional context of planning. • Describe the data and analytical instruments of spatial planning. • Describe the statutory planning process. • Describe EU spatial planning documents: concepts, strategies, and agendas. • Describe statutory planning instruments' purpose, content, and application on national, regional, and local levels. • Describe the participatory planning process.
