Structural Optimization 1

BV010023
Other subject area

Over deze cursus

The module contains an introduction to the methods and applications of structural optimization for engineers. The following contents are treated:

  • Mathematical background,
  • modelling and formulation of optimization tasks,
  • optimization algorithms,
  • multi-criteria optimization,
  • sensitivity analysis,
  • an introduction to topology optimization,
  • an introduction to shape optimization,
  • form finding and minimal surfaces.

Leerresultaten

After participating in this module students have a background knowledge of theory, methods and application fields of structural optimization. They are able to:

  • Spot fields of application for structural optimization,
  • understand basic literature on the basis of their knowledge gained throughout the module,
  • transform the contents taught in this module to similar engineering tasks,
  • characterize and solve optimization tasks.

Toetsing

The final exam (duration 90 min.) is undertaken as a written test. The exam consists of general questions and calculation assignments. By answering general questions students are supposed to show, that they have understood the mathematical background and the basic algorithms. Solving the calculation examples, the students show that they are able to model and formulate optimization questions. Additionally, they show that they are capable of performing sensitivity analyses and optimization tasks with more than one optimization criterion.

The auxiliary means for the exam can be found at the bulletin at the chair or on the chair’s homepage (www.st.bgu.tum.de).

Voorkennis

Basic education, e.g. by a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering or techno mathematics. A basic knowledge of the finite element method (BGU32028 Introduction to Finite Element Methods), as well as a successful participation in lectures in structural analysis, structural mechanics as well as numerical methods are a prerequisite.

Activiteiten

The module is based on a lecture and an exercise part. The lecture consists of classical presentations with script and notes. For consolidation of the content, exercises containing hand calculations and computer software are conducted. For further intensification of the contents additional exercise sheets (“Check your knowledge”) are provided as well as a voluntary colloquium.
